TED Talk: The Muse for an Education
Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still - Chinese Proverb; Never fear the expansion of your mind and fear the waste of your talent by being idle. I have met countless friends whom I have lost contact with for they departed with their families to Mexico. Some of which were so wise for their age, but their education was never something important in their lives. One of my best friends, before moving to North Lawndale, Bruno was the funniest and smartest person in my class. He and I would ask questions about everything, one thing I never knew about him, that I later found out, was the fact that he and his family were struggling to live in a home. He would sell corn, fruit cups, jellos, and other things to keep food and a roof over his family. He was the oldest of the brothers. If I compare Bruno’s story to mine, I would say we did not share the same fortunes. Thus leading me to really ask, if social justice is present when children put having to sell things in order to have home, better yet, food to eat every night, is social justice really there for people who may have a similar story? Social Justice being the right to an education, the right to have a home without having to fear of not having one the next day, the right to have food every night and to sleep on a bed inside a warm place. Via the Education system I most want to prevent students from suffering the same fate my best friend Bruno had, I want to help inspire students to further their education to better not only themselves but also their families’ future as well.
When one thinks about Social Justice many people do not include the fact that a quality education deprives a person of being an active citizen and the betterment of their life. It is an injustice put on the sidelines while Corporations and top CEOs across the nation sit back and care less about the 99 percenters. Legislation across the nation has targeted the depletion of a quality education by naming some studies “Un-American” i.e. the Arizona Law. Education to some people becomes an option when money is not coming home to pay the bills, when the electric company is calling constantly to inform you of your payment overdue, when the gas has been shut off because your parents have long overdue the bill. Some people decide whether to, even, see education as important when things do not change for the better and everything stays the same.
Through fixing how the education system works I know that changes will be seem throughout the board. Increasing salary pension, more funding towards opening more after school jobs for students to both have a chance to do their work and gain money in doing so, thus keeping educators motivated and young leaders in the making inspired to go to College for the betterment of everyone, not just themselves. This will also keep students off the streets prevented gang violence from increasing for the gift cards they receive will prevent the mal use of the money given to them to stay. Many say but where is this money going to come from, the answer is simple – budgeting the what and how Congress spends its money will greatly influence the money people for these programs. William Jefferson Clinton made this possible, by spending less than the revenue they intended to spend thus leading to refund for tax payers. Careful monitoring over the Economy will prevent future error from reoccurring in the United States. Depletion in how National Security of Defense uses its money will save the US thousands in revenue. The Cold War is over, the fight for natural resources and greed is the only drive towards imperialism – we are no longer cave men, we have brains capable of making the smalls surgical procedures without making a dent in our bodies, we can create power from the sun, but we can not control our thirst to be the top nation? Does America’s ancestors vision of being a liberated nation play into the notions of bombing life from the planet? If so, then expect life to deplete to only ashes for our greed will only create self-destruction amongst the countries.
“The problem is not just the things we do not know (consider the one in five American adults who, according to the National Science Foundation, thinks the sun revolves around the Earth); it's the alarming number of Americans who have smugly concluded that they do not need to know such things in the first place. Call this anti-rationalism -- a syndrome that is particularly dangerous to our public institutions and discourse,” according to Susan Jacoby, a Washington Post writer. America is potential influenced over the ignorance that Fox tries to convey via their control over most of the Nation’s newspapers and mainstream news stations.
I will not let the ignorance of others and the lack of economically support for the families prevent a child’s future from being taken away. I will stand up for how the educational system nationally, figures how funding should be truly and rationally be spent. Via the education system one can create a lot of change they just have to know what to do. Figuring out the logistics in politics is something I pride myself in learning through education, ironically, but in doing so I know I must know as much as how the Government and America came to be – how the notions of the fear of a big government can be used to construct a more positive look. It takes only one person to start this from happening, and with the help of my colleagues if you allow me to continue taking I will explain the process where America has long overdue a conversation in Education and Social Policy makings. Thank you for now.
